Project Suncatcher SpaceX: Could SpaceX Help Put AI in Orbit?

Google's Project Suncatcher is exploring a future where AI compute happens in space.

And SpaceX may become part of that story.

Google has confirmed that it has held discussions with SpaceX and other potential partners about Project Suncatcher, which aims to build solar-powered satellite infrastructure carrying Google's AI chips.

Google's current plan is still experimental.

The company is preparing prototype satellites to test how its TPUs perform in orbit, with earlier plans pointing toward a 2027 learning mission.

Why SpaceX?

Launch infrastructure is an obvious piece of the puzzle.

An orbital AI data center needs to get hardware into space, and potentially replace or expand satellite capacity over time.

SpaceX's launch capabilities make it a natural potential partner for any company pursuing large-scale orbital infrastructure.

But launching satellites is only one part of the challenge.

The satellites need power.

They need cooling.

They need radiation protection.

They need high-bandwidth communication.

And they need to coordinate computing workloads across the network.

Google's research suggests that satellites in suitable orbits could have access to substantially more solar energy than terrestrial systems.

That is the fundamental attraction.

AI compute is becoming an energy problem as much as a chip problem.

Project Suncatcher is an attempt to rethink the infrastructure around that demand.

Whether orbital data centers become economically viable is still unknown.

For now, Google and its potential partners are testing whether the basic engineering works.

The first step isn't building an AI cloud in space.

It's proving that AI hardware can survive and compute effectively there.
