OpenAI’s Always-On “o” Assistant: What It Signals for Enterprise Agents

OpenAI is testing an always-on assistant referred to internally as “o.” Early descriptions suggest a system that can stay active across email, tasks, and other workflows rather than waiting for a single prompt. If the feature reaches production, it will push the industry further toward persistent agents that operate continuously in the background.

For consumers the idea is convenient. For enterprises it raises a sharper set of questions. An always-on agent needs broader and longer-lasting access to systems and data. It also needs stronger controls around what it is allowed to do without human approval. The longer an agent runs without supervision, the higher the chance it will take an action that requires later correction.

This is the same design tension we address in every production deployment at GlobalNodes. Persistent agents are powerful, but only if the architecture includes continuous monitoring, clear permission boundaries, and reversible actions. We build those controls into our AI-Powered Team Replacement systems and into the infrastructure layers we deliver through AI Infrastructure Setup.

The “o” experiment also shows where the market is heading. Single-turn chat interfaces are giving way to agents that maintain context and act over time. Enterprises that still treat AI as a question-answering tool will find themselves behind. Those that already design for continuous operation with proper guardrails will be ready to adopt the next generation of capabilities.

If your team is exploring always-on or background agents, the practical next step is a clear map of access, logging, and approval gates. Our AI MVP Build engagements often begin with exactly that mapping so the first production version is already controllable.

OpenAI’s “o” is still in testing. The direction it points toward is not. Persistent agents are coming. The organizations that design the control plane first will capture the value with far less operational risk.
