NVIDIA's acquisition of Hugging Face is one of the biggest moves yet to connect the open AI software ecosystem with the world's dominant AI hardware company.
NVIDIA announced an agreement to acquire Hugging Face for approximately $12.93 billion, while an SEC filing lists an approximately $11.9 billion purchase price subject to adjustments, plus up to roughly $1 billion in employee retention awards.
Hugging Face has become a central platform for open AI development.
Its ecosystem includes millions of models, datasets and applications, with more than 18 million developers, researchers and creators using the platform according to NVIDIA.
Why would NVIDIA want it?
Hardware is only one part of AI.
Developers need models, datasets, tools and deployment infrastructure.
Hugging Face sits directly inside that software ecosystem.
For NVIDIA, owning the platform could create a much deeper relationship with developers building the next generation of AI applications.
There is an important caveat.
NVIDIA says Hugging Face will remain an open platform and developers will continue to choose the models, frameworks, clouds and inference providers they want.
The acquisition is expected to close in the first half of 2027, subject to regulatory approvals.
That means the long-term implications will depend heavily on how NVIDIA operates the platform after the transaction.
For the AI industry, however, the strategic logic is clear.
The competition is no longer only about chips.
It is about owning or influencing the full AI developer stack.
