Meta has open-sourced Muse Gadgets, a set of firmware and tools that let developers run its Muse AI agent on inexpensive hardware such as Raspberry Pi boards, ESP32 microcontrollers, e-ink displays, and streaming sticks. The goal is to make the agent available beyond phones and computers.
The release continues the shift of AI agents from pure software into physical devices. Once an agent can live on a small board with a screen, speaker, or button, the interaction model changes. The agent is no longer something a user opens. It becomes a persistent presence in the environment.
For enterprises the development raises both opportunity and risk. On the opportunity side, specialized hardware can make agents more useful for specific workflows — factory floors, field service, retail, or healthcare settings where a phone or laptop is inconvenient. On the risk side, every new device expands the attack surface and the number of places an agent can act without continuous human supervision.
At GlobalNodes we approach hardware-linked agents with the same discipline we apply to software-only systems. Permissions remain tightly scoped. Actions are logged. High-impact steps require human approval. These controls are built into our AI Infrastructure Setup work and our AI-Powered Team Replacement deployments. The physical form factor does not change the need for clear boundaries.
The open-source release also lowers the barrier for experimentation. Teams can prototype agent experiences on low-cost hardware before committing to larger production systems. That speed is useful only if the governance layer keeps pace. Rapid prototyping without corresponding controls simply creates more places for unexpected behavior to appear.
If your organization is exploring agent deployments beyond traditional software interfaces, the Muse Gadgets release is a useful signal. Map the intended physical environments clearly. Confirm that monitoring and approval gates travel with the agent onto the device. Those steps turn an interesting hardware experiment into a controllable production capability — the same transition we help clients make across every engagement.
