The EU AI Act has moved from a largely preparatory phase into active enforcement.

From 2 August 2026, the European Commission's AI Office and national authorities gained important enforcement powers, while several transparency requirements also became applicable.

For businesses using AI in Europe, this changes the compliance conversation.

What changed?

The AI Act is being implemented in stages rather than through one single deadline.

Some prohibited AI practices have already been restricted, while obligations for general-purpose AI providers have been in effect since August 2025.

From August 2026, enforcement powers for general-purpose AI providers became active. The AI Office can request documentation, conduct evaluations and take compliance measures.

Transparency requirements also matter.

Depending on the system, businesses may need to tell users when they are interacting with AI and provide appropriate labeling for certain AI-generated or manipulated content.

What should businesses do?

A practical AI compliance program should start with an inventory.

Organizations need to know:

Which AI systems are being used?

Who provides them?

What data do they process?

What decisions do they influence?

What level of human oversight exists?

What documentation and audit logs are available?

The technical architecture matters too.

Access controls, model monitoring, data lineage, logging and incident management should be built into the system rather than added after deployment.

The bigger picture

EU AI Act enforcement does not mean every AI application suddenly faces the same requirements.

The obligations depend on the system, its role and its risk category.

But one thing is clear: AI governance is becoming an operational responsibility.

Companies building AI for the European market should treat compliance as part of product and infrastructure design, not simply as a legal checklist.
