Databricks' acquisition of Row Zero may look strange at first.
Databricks is known for data and AI infrastructure.
Row Zero is a spreadsheet company.
So why buy it?
The answer is AI agents.
Databricks announced on September 24 that it had acquired Row Zero to bring its spreadsheet experience into Genie, the company's AI coworker platform.
The idea is surprisingly practical.
Businesses already use spreadsheets for financial analysis, forecasting, operations and sales planning.
Instead of forcing employees to abandon that workflow for an AI chatbot, Databricks wants AI and spreadsheets to work together.
Row Zero connects directly to live, governed enterprise data while supporting familiar spreadsheet functions such as formulas and pivots.
That solves another problem.
AI agents need access to business data, but enterprises don't want employees copying sensitive information into uncontrolled tools.
With Row Zero integrated into Databricks, data permissions and governance can remain attached to the workflow.
The acquisition also gives Genie a more familiar interface.
A finance team doesn't necessarily want to “chat with an AI” to build a financial model.
They may simply want to open a spreadsheet, change assumptions and ask an agent to analyze the result.
That's an important direction for enterprise AI.
The winning interface may not be a chatbot.
It may be the tools employees already use, enhanced with agents underneath them.
Databricks has also said it plans to pursue additional acquisitions.
The Row Zero deal therefore says something bigger about enterprise software:
AI is moving into existing workflows rather than asking businesses to replace them.
