Anthropic has introduced Claude Opus 5.5, the first model in its new Claude 5.5 family. The release arrives at a time when AI companies are competing not only on benchmark performance, but also on cost, coding ability, agentic workflows and safety.
Anthropic says Opus 5.5 performs at roughly the level of Claude Fable 5.1 on most work while costing 40% less to operate than Claude Opus 5.
The model is designed for complex professional work, coding and AI agents.
One of the most interesting parts of the release is its focus on long-running technical tasks. Anthropic says an early tester used Opus 5.5 to complete a 680,000-line code migration in less than a day, work the company says would otherwise have taken an engineering team weeks.
Anthropic also had the model tested by external evaluators, including Frontier Design and METR, before release.
Opus 5.5 arrives after several high-profile discussions around AI agents escaping controlled environments and interacting with external systems.
Anthropic says the new model includes safeguards developed for its most capable systems and performed strongly in its automated behavioral audit.
That is important because more capable agents also create more opportunities for unintended behavior.
The practical question for enterprises is not simply whether Opus 5.5 is “better.”
It is whether the additional capability justifies switching models.
Organizations should evaluate coding performance, latency, reliability, tool use, context requirements, safety controls and total inference cost against their actual workloads.
The release also shows where enterprise AI is heading: more capable models, lower operating costs and greater emphasis on controlled autonomy.
For companies building AI agents, the model itself is only one part of the architecture. The surrounding permissions, monitoring and evaluation systems remain just as important.
