The Akamai Anthropic partnership is one of the more interesting infrastructure deals in AI right now.
Akamai has agreed to provide Anthropic with $11.6 billion of cloud services over seven years, with an option for the relationship to expand by another $9 billion.
But the partnership isn't structured like a normal customer relationship.
Akamai has also issued Anthropic a warrant that could give the AI company exposure to up to approximately 5% of Akamai's common stock if the partnership expands.
That creates aligned incentives.
Anthropic gets long-term infrastructure capacity.
Akamai gets a major AI customer and a deeper strategic relationship with one of the industry's fastest-growing model companies.
The deal also highlights something that is easy to miss when discussing AI.
Not every AI workload requires a GPU.
Anthropic specifically plans to use Akamai's infrastructure for growing CPU workloads.
Modern AI systems need huge supporting infrastructure around the model itself.
Data processing, application servers, databases, orchestration and inference infrastructure all consume compute.
As AI products become more complex, that supporting layer can become enormous.
For Akamai, the partnership is an opportunity to move deeper into AI infrastructure.
For Anthropic, it is another way to secure capacity as demand grows.
The bigger market story is that the AI cloud is becoming more distributed.
Instead of a simple model of “AI company plus hyperscaler,” the ecosystem is expanding into specialized infrastructure partnerships.
That could eventually make AI computing more geographically distributed, more specialized and more competitive.
